The Office "Knock Knock"
When asked to write about a comedy piece my initial thought immediately reverts to Michael Scott from The Office. His playful yet annoying character to his other colleagues in their shared workspace allows the viewers to find his punny humor laughable. In a particular episode referred to as “Knock Knock” in season five of The Office, Michael Scott begins annoying one of his colleagues, the receptionist, Pam. He proceeds to pester Pam while she is in the middle of a phone call asking her knock knock, knock knock continuously. After Pam is finished, Michael delivers his pun which in the reading is referred to as the “weakest form of wit.” He snickers while asking Pam if she would buddha his bread as a joke that does not land with Pam. Michael Scott is the king of puns which he delivers at the most inconvenient times. The puns that he repeatedly says are never as funny to Michael Scott’s colleagues which allows the viewers to be more entertained by them. Nobody in The Office lets Michael’s childish behaviour bother them especially because of his foolish demeanor. The interest and hype of the television show The Office is derived from the comic relief that is inevitable when viewing an episode. All individuals need comic relief in their lives no matter the amount of stress that they are involved in. In the reading it discussed theories, one of which is referred to as a relief theory. Relief theories are temporary and allow the audience to a take a quick step back from their lives and enjoy some humor, for example watching an episode of The Office is a time where a relief theory can take place. Usually relief theories are complete nonsense, another reason why Michael Scott is a perfect example. He constantly drops comic relief lines that are absurd, punny, and sometimes offensive, but some way or another they serve as a relief for a split second. No matter the day Michael Scott allows his audience watching The Office to have a chance of a temporary removal from any situation in life to enjoy a moment of relief and humor.
The Office is fascinating in the sense that it is often a show that makes fun of someone's sense of humor. So we have humor about a sense of humor. How does this function in terms of the three theories?
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with you when you say that the office provides a lot of relief humor. It is just little silly nonsense that is said, usually making fun of someone.
