Luckily I did not miss out during my childhood because I loved watch Tom and Jerry with my older brother. It was honestly one of the only times that my brother and I got along. Anyways, I always loved when Tom and Jerry was on because it was so different from what I was use to watching. I was a typical young girl and lived for watching the Disney channel, but I would stop everything to watch Tom and Jerry. I always found it intriguing that young kids could understand what was occurring throughout each short episode due to the fact there was no sound. I believe that the reason it was so captivating to all ages was because of the incongruity that happened during the show. There was never a time where Tom and Jerry were not scheming to take down the other. There was constant mischief between them, and it allowed for young children to find humor in the show despite the fact that there was no sound. I particularly like the scene that Tyler chose to focus on. I personally do not remember this exact scene, but I watched a clip to refresh my memory. I thought that it was funny how there was just complete chaos that broke out, but Tom still tries to continue his performance despite the chaos. The aspect of Tom and Jerry that always interested me was the fact that the characters, although animals, have such human characteristics. Just like Tyler said, Jerry tends to use more human tendencies than Tom in regards to his violence towards Tom. No animal really thinks like Tom and Jerry do, but their mischief allows for audience to enjoy the show no matter the age of the viewers.
I also watched Tom and Jerry with my brother! I agree that the show was a good break from watching Disney channel.
ReplyDeleteThat's such a good point that even if it is simple, it's in a way more sophisticated that a lot of kids humor so it does teach kids to read body language and behavior in a pretty advanced way.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you! I also watch Tom and Jerry, it also was a good break toward Disney Channel. The best part of the show is the tension between the characters.
ReplyDeleteYou had very good points and I thought it was interesting how you pointed out that kids were able to understand Tom and Jerry despite the fact that there was no sound and they even were able to find it comical because of the incongruity theory.
