The “mockumentary” style of the movie What We Do in the Shadows allows all viewers to have a laugh out loud moment making it a relatable work of comedy. The style of the movie in itself is hilarious because viewers to have a relatable perspective on the movie by the camera man giving a different angle than what most individuals are use to. Even though I had not heard of the movie prior to reading Matthew’s blog post it was a refreshing read and takes on the incongruity theory. The incongruity theory itself deals with thoughts or concepts that do not flow together in a normal occurrence of events in an individual's mind. The events that contribute to the incongruous acts in the movie What We Do in the Shadows are what make it a hit. Even watching just a few clips of the movie had me laughing out loud which I did not expect. The fact that the vampires were so old is funny in itself. On top of them being so old it is funny for them to try and be hip and cool with the younger people. For example, trying to get into a nightclub that had younger people at it. Imagine your grandma in line with you to get into a nightclub on a Friday night. It’s just laughable because it’s just such an incongruous act that all you can do is laugh. Along with thinking about your elderly grandma getting into a club with you, the incongruity theory is also present in the fact that Matthew’s parents were sitting behind them in this movie. Fifteen year old boys who think they are on top of the world watching an unexpectedly vulgar and comical movie is funny in itself. It is such a relatable instance in so many individuals lives because my parents were definitely “those parents” who thought other parents wouldn’t allow their kids to hang out with me ever again after an unexpected vulgar movie where we left laughing, and they left mortified waiting for the phone call from an angry parent. Whether it was the movie or the situation with Matthew’s parents the movie What We Do in the Shadows allowed all individuals to have a laugh.

  1. I really like your take on Matt's blog post. The example about bringing a grandma to a club with you was a really good example. I also like the fact that you mentioned Matt going to the movie with his family as a form of incongruity humor.

  2. I think my parents were also those parents. What is the relationship between the incongruity humor and the relatability of the situation of watching the movie?
