Response to Lead Blog #7

I’ve never heard of the television show The Good Place before reading Abi’s blog post, but it seems interesting. It is definitely a different concept than a type of show that I would normally revert to watching but it seems funny. I find it interesting that the show is based off the good place meaning heaven but in reality the cast has been sent to the bad place meaning hell. The concept seems kind of terrifying because that is what some individuals are scared about, being sent to hell, and here is a television show poking fun at it. All of the senses mentioned in Abi’s post seemed funny to me, but the two in particular that I enjoyed were, the first scene involving Jason, and the second sense with Jane. I found the first scene particularly funny for two reasons. The first because Jason is begging for his life but in reality he is already dead. Although death is not a funny topic, the fact that Jason is so caught up in not dying when he already has remains funny. Along with the fact that he already has died Jason is so caught up in not eating off the kids menu. Personally I see nothing wrong with eating off the kids menu, but I can understand where Jason is coming from with regards to not wanting to eat off the kids menu because he believes he is too old. The second scene that I found to be funny was the one with Jane in it. She was walking about a controversial topic regarding Christopher Columbus and how he not only raped but also killed many people. But, Jane does not see this has controversial due to the fact that she is a robot and has no filter. She innocently sees them as “fun facts” that she views as harmless. The usage of the incongruity theory and begin violation both come into place throughout The Good Place, and it is definitely a show that I will have to check out some time.

    Why do you say that it's not your kind of humor? It definitely is a unique kind of comedy in that it is sort of terrifying even as it is light and silly. Classic dark comedy.

    I can see how some people would find the show terrifying. I guess you either love it or you hate it.

    This show plays on the primordial fear of death and the unknown and provides a sense of relief to it by allowing us to laugh at it. Maybe the writers use the show as a way of coping with their own fears?

When asked to write about a comedy piece my initial thought immediately reverts to Michael Scott from The Office. His playful yet annoying character to his other colleagues in their shared workspace allows the viewers to find his punny humor laughable. In a particular episode referred to as “Knock Knock” in season five of The Office, Michael Scott begins annoying one of his colleagues, the receptionist, Pam. He proceeds to pester Pam while she is in the middle of a phone call asking her knock knock, knock knock continuously. Luckily I did not miss out during my childhood because I loved watch Tom and Jerry with my older brother. It was honestly one of the only times that my brother and I got along. Anyways, I always loved when Tom and Jerry was on because it was so different from what I was use to watching. I was a typical young girl and lived for watching the Disney channel, but I would stop everything to watch Tom and Jerry . I always found it intriguing that young kids could understand what was occurring throughout each short episode due to the fact there was no sound. I believe that the reason it was so captivating to all ages was because of the incongruity that happened during the show. There was never a time where Tom and Jerry were not scheming to take down the other. I couldn't agree more with the examples and evidence that you presented as to why The Office will remain a genius act of comedy. The staged, yet seamless transitions of banter between character allows individuals to fall in love with the show and cast throughout each episode. Although, The Office might not be everyone’s cup of tea there are scenes that allow anyone to have a sense of comic relief. The use of the superiority theory is present in many of the characters. For example Dwight, a beloved character, demands power. Dwight is a perfect example of an individual who would have followed Hobbes during his era. Hobbes believed that greed was good and was forceful in his ways of trying to obtain power, just like Dwight, leading them to both look ludicrous. Dwight constantly wants to obtain the highest position in Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, and will knock down anyone in his path to do so.
