I had not watched Superbad until this past summer, and my life is forever changed. The cringe factor is real, and it is something that everyone can relate to. All individuals want to be viewed as the “cool kids” in the eyes of the popular kids, and sometimes it just does not work out. For Seth and Evan they definitely struggled with being accepted the cool kids, but they made a hilarious effort in doing so. I have two favorite parts of the movie, and my two favorite parts coincide with the two scenes that Faith discussed. First, the scene where Fogell, a hilarious misfit, purchases a fact ID. Not only does he come up with the most absurd name, “McLovin”, he also says that he is twenty-five years old. Fogell could have easily he was twenty-one, but his explanation was somewhere along the times of, “how many twenty-one year olds do you think live in this town.” This scene leaves the audience bellowing out with laughter because of the complete incongruity, and the innocent thought process that Fogell underwent when trying to decide between saying he was twenty-one or twenty-five. The second scene that I love is when Fogell has to go and buy the alcohol. He looks like he is twelve years old, but don’t forget his ID says twenty-five, and on top of everything he just appears nervous. All of Fogell’s nerves coupled with his prepubescent face does not bode well for him when he walks up the register. Luckily before the cashier has time to confront him about his ID a man comes into the store to rob it. Fogell is saved and calm until the police show up and ask to see if ID. Fogell almost gives in when the cops ask for his ID, but then realizes that the cops are actually completely unprofessional. The entire movie is filled with the superiority and incongruity theory, and I will always find this movie funny because it is so relatable to teenagers.

  1. Something about McLovin just made the film. I would wager that without this one gag the film would not have achieved cult status the way that it did.

  2. McLovin is just a complete mess of an individual. The sheer idea that someone went through the thought process he did just to come up with something that idiotic is completely hilarious.

  3. Fogell is indeed an idiot but with the utmost confidence nonetheless.
